Last week, the east tower of the landmark building, which dates from the 15th century, had to be supported by a wooden structure.

The problem appears to be that the main building is slowly sinking, while the east tower is not. Therefore, the main building slowly pulls the tower to its direction, causing cracks and other damage.

Probably the entire foundation of the building will have to be replaced. The process can take several years.

The City of Amsterdam has said it will take all necessary measures to save the building.

The Waag was built in the late Middle Ages, to serve as the Eastern entry gateway to Amsterdam. The building dates in any case from 1488, possibly from as early as 1425.
Currently, it houses a cafe / restaurant.
