WO II bomb found near Amsterdam Schiphol Airport - one runway closed

published: Tuesday, June 03 2008, 9:48AM

Yesterday, an old bomb has been found near one of the Schiphol runways.

The bomb was dropped in the second World War, by the English, but didn't go off. Yesterday it was found on a depth of 4 meters.
One of the runways has been closed, but so far it appears there are no flight delays because of this, as other runways can take over.

It still happens rather frequently that bombs from this period are found in the Netherlands. The airport was one of the locations that was heavily bombarded in the period 1940-1945. Two years ago a similar British bomb was found near the Amsterdam airport.

The Explosives Removal Agency of the Dutch army will remove the bomb. The runway may be closed for a few days.
