Earlier this year the authorities had ordered several citizens to stop flying the rainbow flag (or else pay a fine of EUR 2500,-), as this was considered a commercial message, which, without a licence, is illegal on houses.

The same authorities have now decided that the flag represents a symbol of liberation, and is therefore not illegal advertising.
Only one flag per house is now permitted. This measure is intended to prevent people from completely covering their gables with flags and other messages.

Earlier this year there was commotion about gay bars hanging rainbow flags on their gables. This was also considered advertising, but is now permitted.
