Cutting down of Anne Frank's chestnut tree postponed

published: Thursday, October 04 2007, 12:08AM

The Anne Frank tree will not be cut down, at least for the time being.

The tree (possibly the only tree in the world with its own webcam) is famous because Anne Frank described it in her diary, it being one of the few things she could see from her hiding place.

The tree has a disease, and in November 2006 it was announced it could not be saved and would have to be cut.

However, the licence to cut the tree has not been issued, because of objections that were raised by opponents of cutting the tree.
The opponents now get 3 months for a plan to save the tree.
Some tree specialists think the tree can be saved, and they are supported by several neighbours and people worldwide, who think everything should be done to save it.
