'Beer bike' banned from centre of Amsterdam

published: Tuesday, June 03 2008, 7:10PM

The beer bicycle will be banned from the centre of Amsterdam.

The beer bike is a riding 'cafe', on which about 10 to 20 persons can sit, and cycle to move the bike.
Although officially the person in front, who steers the vehicle, must remain sober, this is often not the case.

There has been an increase of complaints about noise, alcohol abuse, and beer bikes that run into other people on the street.

The Amsterdam centre authorities, together with the police, have decided to ban the vehicle from the centre.

The beer bike is also used in other parts of the country, where apparently there are less or no problems.
