Amsterdam makes E 130 million from paid car parking

published: Tuesday, September 01 2009, 3:21PM

Amsterdam makes about Euro 130 million per year, from paid parking. This makes it the biggest parking earner in the Netherlands.

Nationwide, municipalities collect E 533 million per year, which is 10 times more than 20 years ago.

The rise in parking revenue is not only caused by higher parking rates (up to E 5,- per hour in the centre of Amsterdam), but also by expanding the areas with paid parking.

Of all taxes levied by Amsterdam, about a quarter is from paid parking.

Recently, it was in the news that Amsterdam is one of the most expensive cities in the world to park a car.
There are, however, cheaper options in Amsterdam. At the P+R parking places (outside the centre), parking is possible for E 6 per 24 hours.

Here is a map with parking places in Amsterdam (including the cheap ones in the outskirts).
