| Katana Sword | 1967 pieces of Diamonds with a total weight of 54.48 carat
494 pieces of Rubies with a total weight of 10.69 carat
Katana, is the Japanese word for sword.
This masterpiece of art has been fabricated in the glass workshops of Murano, Venice. This solid piece of glass is molded into it’s final shape by hand at a temperature of 1200 degrees Celsius, which is an extremely delicate process, known to the Murano glass experts only.
Monique Zegerius, a Dutch glass artist, has designed this Katana and commissioned the sword to be made in Murano, giving specific directives to the glass master.
Lilly B, a Dutch jewel designer had the difficult task to set the diamonds and rubies. Simple drilling in this glass is impossible, because it would shatter the glass. A very special process of high pressure water “drilling” was used to attach the gold to the Glass. | Location (more info): Diamond Museum Amsterdam (Diamantmuseum) Paulus Potterstraat 8

| Van Gogh's studio practice: Canvases re-used | Vincent van Gogh regularly made a painting on a canvas he had used before. He began doing this in May of 1885, when he was still living in Nuenen, and continued this practice in his Paris years (1886-1888). At first he painted directly over the first composition, but gradually went to work differently depending on his ideas for a given painting. Sometimes he used the relief or the colours of the first image in the new painting, but if he wanted to make a thinly painted work requiring a smooth and even surface, he would thoroughly scrape off the first depiction. In some instances, he is also known to have covered the first scene with an opaque layer: a light one for a bright and transparently painted view of Paris, and a dark one for a subdued forest scene.

| A stitch a day... Embroidering in prison 1940-1945 | Thousands of Dutch women were imprisoned during the Second World War: Jewish women, women in the Dutch East Indies, and those arrested who were members of the Resistance. Conditions in prison varied considerably, but whenever they could, these women embroidered.
Much of the preserved embroidery in this exhibition is by women who ended up in prison or in concentration camps because of their part in the Resistance. Embroidery by women in the Japanese camps in the Dutch East Indies is also shown.

| The Royal Palace | Many rooms can be visited from the building that was designed and built as the Town Hall of Amsterdam, later converted into a Palace. Paintings by famous artists such as Ferdinand Bol and Govaert Flinck and sculpture of the Antwerp sculptor Artus Quellinus refer symbolically to the power and wealth of the city of Amsterdam in the Dutch Golden Age. On the ground floor is the Vierschaar opened, the marble room where – in the Town Hall period – death sentences were handed down in front of people.
The Royal Palace Amsterdam has the largest collection of Empire furniture outside France. After his departure, Louis Napoleon left almost all expensive furniture behind. The furniture, one of the best preserved and most complete Empire collections in the world, is in full glory to be seen.
The Palace is open, but closed during Royal Events. The days of public opening can be found in the calendar | Location (more info): Royal Palace Amsterdam / Koninklijk Paleis Dam Square

Two years ago Museum Van Loon, with the help of various funds and individuals, purchased the coach house that is situated at the back of the garden of the museum. On the 22nd of September 2011, the birthday of Professor Maurits van Loon (1923 - 2006), founder of the museum, the restoration of the coach house was completed. He would have been delighted to see the historic unity of canal house, garden and coach house restored.
