Taxi inspectors Amsterdam Central Station will work until 4am

Starting today, inspectors will check whether taxi drivers on the taxi stand at Central Station obey the rules.

The most important rule the inspectors check is that taxi drivers can not refuse short rides. As most incoming tourists have booked hotels in the centre, they are often refused by drivers.

Until now, the checks were only until 1 am. After complaints about 'wild west scenes' after 1pm, the city has decided to let the inspectors work until 4am.
Between 4am and 7am, there are not many travellers, and consequently also not many taxis.

The measure is going to last until at least June 2007, when the Amsterdamtaxi will be introduced (see this article).
