Student occupation of university building ended

The occupation of the main building of the University of Amsterdam (located at Spui, in the centre of Amsterdam), was ended by the police today.

The student occupation was carried out by students, who wanted to protest against the increase of enrollment fees, and the new selection criteria for admission.

Although the University Board said it agrees with the students, the students decided to occupy the administrative centre of the university, the Maagdenhuis.
Occupation of this building has become a tradition, after the well-known occupation back in the 60's, when students wanted a more democratic university.

The occupation was ended by the police, who said they did not encounter any major problems in vacating the building.
