Amsterdam will not enforce prohibiton of 'magic mushrooms' - sales continue

The sale of 'magic mushrooms' is going on, despite the national prohibition that took effect yesterday.

The mayor of Amsterdam, Job Cohen, said yesterday that there is still a lot of unclarity about who should take the lead in the enforcement of the new law.
He said that in Amsterdam no prosecution will take place until the government has set out clear guidelines.
Cohen had previously said he does not agree with the prohibition, as it merely means the sale and production will go underground, and the authorities will lose control.

Several smartshops in Amsterdam have said they will continue to sell the magic mushrooms, for the time being.
Amsterdam has about 20 smartshops.
