Amsterdam canal pride parade: Christian Democrats and soldiers in uniform take part

Saturday's Canal pride tour through the Prinsengracht canal in Amsterdam has two more novelties. The Christian Democrat party will take part, and army staff are allowed to take part in uniform.

It is for the first part that the CDA (the Christian Democrat party) officially takes part in the gay pride canal tour.
The Christian Democrats is one of the biggest political parties in the Netherlands, and usually takes part in the coalition governments that rule the country.
With their participation they hope to promote dialogue between gays and lesbians with, and gays and lesbians without a christian background.

Another 'premiere' is army staff in uniform. Last year, the Ministry of Defense still prohibited soldiers to take part in the canal parade in uniform, but this year it is permitted.
A spokeswoman said that it is okay, provided that they wear a correct uniform.

Here is a map with the route of the Amsterdam Gay Pride tour, which starts at 2pm, on Saturday August 1.
