Amsterdam Liberation Day without old army vehicles

The mayor of Amsterdam has decided not to give permission for the parade of old army vehicles, that has been part of the Liberation Day festivities in earlier years.

In 2000 and 1995 the foundation 'Keep them Rolling' organized the parade of army vehicles, with Canadian veterans entering the city on old tanks and jeeps.

For this year the parade was planned too, but permission was not given, because of lack of police staff to guide the parade.

The Canadian veterans are now given a canal boat tour through Amsterdam.

Liberation Day is on May 5, and celebrates the liberation from the Nazi occupation. May 4 is Remembrance Day, with 2 minutes of silence at 8pm. See the website of the National Committee 4 and 5 May (English section) for more info.
