40th Amsterdam Marathon starts with 45,000 runners

One of the big sport events in Amsterdam is the Amsterdam Marathon, held every year in October. This year's edition is on Sunday October 18.

Tomorrow's Marathon has about 45,000 participants from a record number of 105 nationalities. About 17,000 will do the entire Marathon.
The event can be followed on tv stations in 137 countries.

The marathon starts and ends in the Amsterdam Olympic Stadium (built for the Olympic Games held in Amsterdam in 1928).

The route is in the South and East part of Amsterdam. It goes through the Vondelpark, past the Rijksmuseum, along a very scenic part of the river Amstel, then through Amsterdam-East, the Vondelpark again, to finish in the Olympic Stadium.
The exact route of the marathon can be seen on this pdf file.

The marathon starts at 9.30am and the first athletes are expected to reach the Stadium about 2 hours later, just after 11.30am.
